From cleansing to safekeeping, here's our guide to give your earthly treasures the love they deserve.
Just as we sometimes need a moment to reset, many crystal traditions encourage us to give our stones a little energetic refresh, too.
Cleansing is traditionally used to clear unwanted or stagnant energy, while charging is believed to renew or strengthen a crystal’s energetic qualities.
There are lots ways to do this, and no single ritual you need to follow. Explore what resonates with you below and find a practice that feels right.
Cleaning
While energetic cleansing is a personal ritual, physically cleaning your crystals helps preserve their natural beauty.
And here's something worth knowing: not all crystals like water! Some minerals are porous, delicate or water-soluble, meaning a quick rinse can do more harm than good.
✦ Gently removing dust with a soft, dry cloth or clean, soft-bristled brush.
✦ Avoiding harsh chemicals, household cleaners and abrasive materials.
✦ Keeping delicate or porous crystals away from water unless you know they're water-safe.
✦ Handling fragile points, clusters and formations with extra care.
✦ Checking the properties of your particular crystal before trying a new cleaning method.
✦ Selenite and halite should never be soaked in water, as they can dissolve or deteriorate. Pyrite and some other mineral specimens can also be damaged by moisture.
✦ When in doubt, keep things simple with a soft, dry cloth.
Displaying & Storing
There's no right or wrong way to display your collection. Create a space that feels beautiful and meaningful to you, but keep the following in mind:
Some crystals can fade or change colour with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Amethyst, rose quartz, fluorite and kunzite are particularly worth keeping somewhere shaded.
Crystal points, clusters and softer minerals can chip or scratch when stored together. Keep fragile pieces separate or wrap them in a soft cloth.
Bathrooms, windowsills and other damp environments aren't suitable for every crystal. Keep moisture-sensitive specimens somewhere dry.
Natural crystals vary greatly in hardness and durability. Some are wonderfully resilient, while others need a much gentler touch.
